Leadership was lacking here for sure. Symptom of lazy policing.

Grandson threatening his grandpa with a knife and police show up to shoot the grandson after he lunges sounds like a shooting is justified. What else are the cops going to do in that situation? Lazy people think lazy outcomes which results in expensive litigation.

Look de-escalate to the point where the knife is out of the grandson's hand. Grandson was focused on the grandfather, so this should have been easier to de-escalate.

- Talk him out of stabbing anyone and dropping the knife. Commanding doesn't work when they are enraged and have zero respect and fear for you.
- Get the grandfather moving away from the threat.

- On the fly planning on how to neutralize the threat in the case talking doesn't work.

- Non lethal force should be employed first in that case. Taser/Pepper gun.

- Two officers should be ready to charge in if a taser or pepper gun is deployed. Mask and or gloves are very much helpful here.

Shooting the grandson would have been justified in the eyes of many if he lunged at the cops instead. Now those all those involved will have to deal with this for the rest of their lives. Situations like this compound and drive people to suicide.

PREVENTION is the desired outcome.
